The pelagic zone consists of the entire water column of the open ocean. It is subdivided into the epipelagic zone (<200 m, the uppermost part of the ocean that receives enough sunlight to allow photosynthesis), the mesopelagic zone (200–1000 m depth) and the bathypelagic zone (>1000 m depth). The term ‘pelagic’ can also refer to organisms that live in the pelagic zone. (English)
